Churches of Christ Tasmania is an association of independent and autonomous churches in the State which combine together for mutual support and encouragement. Together they undertake tasks which they could not accomplish on their own.
Churches of Christ developed in the 19th century as a reaction to the sharp and often angry denominational divisions and have always had a strong ecumenical flavour. Their guide in the practice of Christianity is the Bible. Individual churches vary greatly in size and structure but most have a basic democratic form. Elected elders and church officers oversee the life of the church and many have paid professionally trained ministers, There is no formal distinction between clergy and laity.
Churches of Christ proclaim and practice baptism by immersion of people who have responded to the Gospel message. Corporate worship focuses on the weekly celebration of communion (The Lord's Supper, which is open to all who follow Jesus) and the preaching of the Word.
